Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Divide the trip distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency (MPG) to get gallons needed, then multiply by the price per gallon. A 300-mile trip in a vehicle getting 25 MPG at $3.50 per gallon costs 12 gallons times $3.50, or $42.00.
What is a good fuel efficiency (MPG)?
The average passenger car gets about 25-30 MPG. Hybrid vehicles range from 40-60 MPG. Trucks and SUVs typically get 15-25 MPG. Electric vehicles have equivalent MPG ratings of 90-130 MPGe. Higher MPG means lower fuel costs per mile.
How do I calculate cost per mile?
Divide the fuel price per gallon by your vehicle's MPG. At $3.50 per gallon with 25 MPG, your fuel cost per mile is $0.14. This does not include other vehicle costs like maintenance, insurance, and depreciation.
Does highway or city driving use more fuel?
City driving with frequent stops and starts typically uses 15-30% more fuel than steady highway driving. Most vehicles have separate city and highway MPG ratings. For mixed driving, use the combined MPG rating as a reasonable estimate.
