Frequently Asked Questions

How much mulch do I need?

Measure the length and width of your bed in feet, then decide on depth. Most landscapers recommend 2-3 inches for flower beds and 3-4 inches for weed suppression. Plug those numbers into the calculator to get cubic yards or bags needed.

How deep should mulch be?

A 2-3 inch layer is ideal for most garden beds. Going deeper than 4 inches can suffocate plant roots and trap too much moisture. Around trees, keep mulch 3-6 inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Standard mulch bags hold 2 cubic feet each, so you need about 13.5 bags per cubic yard. For large projects, buying by the cubic yard in bulk is usually cheaper than buying bags.

How often should mulch be replaced?

Organic mulch like wood chips decomposes over 1-2 years and should be topped off annually. Rubber or stone mulch lasts much longer but does not add nutrients to the soil. Refresh whenever the layer thins below 2 inches.
