Frequently Asked Questions

How is salary broken down per paycheck?

Divide your annual salary by the number of pay periods: 52 (weekly), 26 (bi-weekly), 24 (semi-monthly), or 12 (monthly). Then subtract federal tax, state tax, FICA (7.65%), and any other deductions to get net pay.

Why does bi-weekly pay differ from semi-monthly?

Bi-weekly means every two weeks (26 paychecks/year). Semi-monthly means twice a month on fixed dates (24 paychecks/year). Bi-weekly checks are slightly smaller but you get two extra per year. Annual totals are the same.

What is FICA on a salary paycheck?

FICA is 7.65% of your gross pay: 6.2% for Social Security (up to $168,600 annual cap) and 1.45% for Medicare (no cap). Your employer pays a matching 7.65%. FICA is not optional and cannot be reduced with deductions.
