Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fill out a W-4?
The current W-4 asks for filing status, dependent information (number of children and other dependents), other income, deductions above the standard amount, and any extra withholding per period. It no longer uses allowances.
How do I know if my withholding is correct?
Compare your year-to-date withholding to your estimated annual tax liability. If you consistently get large refunds (over $1,000), you are withholding too much. If you owe at tax time, you may need to increase withholding or make estimated payments.
When should I update my W-4?
Update when your life circumstances change: marriage/divorce, new child, buying a home, starting a side business, significant income changes, or if you owed more than $1,000 at your last filing. You can update your W-4 with your employer at any time.
