Frequently Asked Questions
How many bricks do I need per square foot?
Standard bricks (8 x 2.25 x 3.625 inches) with 3/8-inch mortar joints require about 6.75 bricks per square foot of wall. Queen bricks need about 5.75 per square foot. Always add 5-10% for waste, cuts, and breakage.
How much mortar do I need?
One bag (80 lbs) of mortar mix covers approximately 35-40 square feet of standard brick wall, or about 35-40 bricks. For a 100 square foot wall needing 675 bricks, plan for about 17-20 bags of mortar. Mortar joint width significantly affects the amount needed.
What is the standard brick size?
The most common US modular brick is 7-5/8 x 2-1/4 x 3-5/8 inches (length x height x width). With a standard 3/8-inch mortar joint, the module becomes 8 x 2-2/3 x 4 inches. Queen bricks are slightly larger at 7-5/8 x 2-3/4 x 3-1/8 inches.
