Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Plan for 10% extra for standard rectangular rooms with straight-lay patterns. For diagonal installations, L-shaped rooms, or rooms with many obstacles, increase to 15-20%. Having extra material also ensures you have matching pieces for future repairs.

Which flooring type is most cost-effective?

Vinyl and laminate are generally the most affordable options at $2-4 per square foot for materials. Carpet is mid-range at $3-5. Tile runs $4-8. Hardwood is the most expensive at $6-12 per square foot. Installation costs vary by type as well.

How do I calculate flooring for an irregularly shaped room?

Break the room into rectangular sections, measure each one, and add the areas together. Always round up each section. For curved areas, approximate with the smallest rectangle that would contain the curve and accept the extra waste.

Should I include closets in my flooring calculation?

Yes, include any area that will receive flooring. Closets, hallways, and alcoves all need to be measured separately and added to the total. Exclude areas where you plan to keep existing flooring or install a different material.
