Frequently Asked Questions
How much grout do I need per square foot?
It depends on tile size and joint width. Larger tiles with narrow joints need less grout per square foot. Small mosaic tiles with wide joints need much more. A typical 12x12 inch tile with 1/8-inch joints needs about 1 pound of grout per 10-12 square feet.
What grout joint width should I use?
Standard grout joints are 1/16 to 1/8 inch for rectified tiles and 1/8 to 3/16 inch for standard tiles. Larger format tiles often use narrower joints for a cleaner look. Natural stone typically uses 1/8 to 1/4 inch joints to accommodate size variations.
What is the difference between sanded and unsanded grout?
Sanded grout is used for joints wider than 1/8 inch because the sand prevents shrinkage cracking. Unsanded grout is used for joints 1/8 inch or narrower and on polished stone where sand could scratch. Using the wrong type leads to cracking or poor adhesion.
How many square feet does a bag of grout cover?
A 25-pound bag of sanded grout covers roughly 200-300 square feet for 12x12 tiles with 1/8-inch joints. Coverage decreases significantly with smaller tiles or wider joints. Always check the manufacturer coverage chart for your specific tile and joint combination.
