What is a full-time equivalent (FTE)?
An FTE represents one employee working full-time hours (typically 40 hours per week). Two part-time employees each working 20 hours per week equal 1.0 FTE. FTE is used for workforce planning, budgeting, benefits eligibility (ACA requires employers with 50+ FTEs to offer health insurance), and productivity benchmarking.
How do I calculate FTE?
Divide total part-time hours by the standard full-time hours per week (usually 40). If you have 5 part-time employees each working 24 hours/week, that is 120 total hours / 40 = 3.0 FTE. Add this to your full-time headcount for total FTE.
Why is FTE important for the ACA?
Under the Affordable Care Act, businesses with 50 or more FTEs must offer affordable health insurance to full-time employees or face penalties. Part-time employee hours are aggregated into FTEs for this calculation, so even businesses with mostly part-time staff may hit the threshold.
