Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard tip percentage?
In the US, the standard tip for sit-down restaurant service is 15-20%. For excellent service, 20-25% is common. Buffets typically warrant 10%. Takeout tipping is optional but 10-15% is increasingly common. Delivery services typically expect 15-20%.
Should I tip before or after tax?
Etiquette experts are divided. Traditionally, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is considered correct since the tax goes to the government, not the server. However, tipping on the total (after tax) is increasingly common and simpler. The difference is usually small.
How do I split a bill fairly?
For even splits, divide the total (including tip) by the number of people. For uneven orders, calculate each person's subtotal, add their proportional share of tax and tip. Many groups find it simplest to split evenly unless there is a large disparity in what people ordered.
