Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the purchase price by the tax rate (as a decimal). For a $100 item at 8.25% tax: $100 x 0.0825 = $8.25 tax, total $108.25. To find the pre-tax price from a total, divide by (1 + rate): $108.25 / 1.0825 = $100.
Do all states have sales tax?
No. Five states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Alaska allows local municipalities to charge sales tax. Some states exempt certain items like groceries, clothing, or prescription drugs.
Do I need to collect sales tax for online sales?
After the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair Supreme Court decision, states can require online sellers to collect sales tax even without physical presence. Thresholds vary by state (typically $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions). Check each state where you sell.
