Frequently Asked Questions
What are the 2024 federal tax brackets?
For single filers: 10% ($0-$11,600), 12% ($11,601-$47,150), 22% ($47,151-$100,525), 24% ($100,526-$191,950), 32% ($191,951-$243,725), 35% ($243,726-$609,350), 37% ($609,351+). Married filing jointly brackets are roughly double.
Does moving to a higher bracket mean all my income is taxed more?
No. Only income above the bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate. If you earn $1 over the 22% bracket, only that $1 is taxed at 22%. All your other income stays at the lower rates. This is a common misconception.
How can I lower my tax bracket?
Contribute to pre-tax retirement accounts (401k, traditional IRA), maximize above-the-line deductions, time income and deductions across tax years, use health savings accounts (HSA), and consider business entity structure if self-employed.
